Ferret Hammocks

I'm afraid I don't have a scanner right now, so I'll do my best to describe how to make My Super-Duper Dual-Duty Ferret Hammocks. Please read the whole thing through first, I think it will help.

    Materials:
  1. fleece
  2. binding
  3. chain
  4. clips

For one hammock you will need a piece of fleece about 9"x18". I picked up a bunch of remnants at Wal~Mart. Fold it in half wrong sides together so the 9" edges are matched up and sew them three inches in from one corner towards the center, than the other corner towards the center. This leaves a 3" opening in the middle.

Then with your tube of fleece still inside out, lay it flat, maneuvering the seam you just made into the center of the square. Now cut four 3" strips of the binding for the hangers. fold them in half and stick the looped end into the corners between the layers and pin them there.

Now sew up the two open sides, making sure to catch the binding. Be sure to sew over the binding at least a few times to secure it well. Turn it right-side-out through the hole you left in the first step.

Now for the hangers. I tried many many things, but the little buggers always managed to chew through it. I ended up going to my local home improvement/hardware store and bought a length of lightweight chain (I cut into 6" pieces) and a bunch of small clips, the kind you'd use on a zipper pull. These are available at craft stores, but they're usually more expensive. Clip one clip onto each end of your chain and then onto your hammock corners and your cage top.

You'll have to experiment with the length of the chains and hanging position to get the height just right.

VOILA! Now you have a dual-purpose hammock/sleeping bag for your ferret!
